Finishing
Our finishing materials are incomplience with the requirements of ASTM F 963-96a Standard
Consumer Safety specification as well as the requirements of the European Standard
EN 71-1994 Part 3.
The finishing process, which is briefly outlined below, is carried out with the utmost
care as we consider it key to our success. At Pulaujava.com, we only use the finest
finishing materials to complete a job.
Wood Preparation
One of the most important steps in wood finishing is sanding. A thorough sanding is often
the factor that separates "acceptable" from "truly excellent" results. Starting with a medium
grade of sandpaper (e.g. #100-120 grit) and gradually working our way to a finer grade
(e.g. #160-220 grit), in the direction of the grain, we get a smooth & uniform finish.
All the sanding dust are then removed before finishing.
Additional sanding is applied to end-grain areas & joint areas, to better control
the absorption of stain Look out for dried glue, especially in the.
Since softwoods and certain hardwoods tend to absorb stain unevenly, we pre-treat the wood
with Pre-Stain Wood Conditioner before staining. This helps to control color penetration.
Additionally, we use an extra coat of wood conditioner on the porous end grain to help
the wood absorb the stain evenly. A thorough sanding will also help control color penetration.
Choosing a Color (Stain) or Special Colors New!
Color is determined by four factors: The color of the stain selected; the nature of
the wood and how porous it is; how long the stain is left on, from a few seconds to
a many minutes; and the extent of wiping when removing excess stain. We offer a wide
choice of wood tone colors.
Applying the Stain or Special Colors New! & then the Protective Finish
We then apply the stain to the the wood and then add a clear protective finish.
The two-step finishing allows us to independently control each step - the depth
of color, and the level of protection. We only use the finest quality stains which
penetrates deep into wood fibers, thus the color becoming part of the wood and not
just a surface film. Since our stains does not raise the grain of the wood, there's
no need to sand in between coats.
A protective finish helps protects, preserves, and enhances the natural beauty of
the wood. The selection of the most appropriate protective finish depends on a number
of considerations e.g. Is the furniture for interior or exterior use? Is superior
durability demanded? Is it going to be subjected to moisture? Once we have these
answer, we can select the types of protective finishes that are available which
best meets your specific performance needs.
For furniture subject to heavy use, it is preferable to use Fast-Drying
Polyurethane (polyplastic protectives) in a satin, semi-gloss or gloss
finish. Its slightly amber color adds a rich appearance to the wood &
gives beautiful, long-lasting protection to any finished or unfinished wood.
We use Polycrylic Protective Finish over pastel wood stains as polyurethane
finishes tend to amber and distort the pastel color while water cleanup finishes
have low odour formulas, which make them convenient to use indoors.
